Someone said that to me the other day, completely unprompted.
A neighbor.

Just casual conversation.

But when they said it — “What you’re doing is important work” — I felt everything inside me come to a sudden, still pause.

Because most days, I don’t think of my work that way.

I think of the to-do lists.
The design projects.
The coaching calls.
The late-night problem-solving.
The constant brainpower it takes to run a business.
The exhausting parts.
The beautiful parts.
The behind-the-scenes that no one sees.

But “important”?
I hadn’t labeled it that.

Yet… the more I’ve sat with those words, the more I realize:

They’re right.

Helping hosts grow.
Helping families feel safe.
Creating spaces that welcome people exactly as they are.
Championing accessibility and inclusion in an industry that often overlooks it.
Supporting new hosts and co-hosts who are trying to build something of their own.
Standing with people who want to create better experiences for their guests.

That is important.

And I don’t say that with ego — I say it with gratitude.
Because this work matters to so many people.
It matters to families who need a safe place to travel.
It matters to hosts trying to create a better life.
It matters to the industry I care about so deeply.

So here’s to doing “important work” — even on the days when it feels ordinary, messy, or uncertain.

When I began designing homes and vacation rentals with neurodiverse guests in mind, I realized how simple it can be to create an environment that feels safe and soothing — yet how rarely we stop to think about it.

Here are just a few easy and inexpensive ways you can make your home more autism-friendly:
1️⃣ Offer sensory-friendly items like fidgets, stress balls, noise-canceling headphones, or a bean bag chair.
2️⃣ Modify lighting by installing a dimmer switch.
3️⃣ Avoid using strong scents or harsh cleaning products.
4️⃣ Install a security lock on the front door for safety and peace of mind (high and separate from keypad lock).
5️⃣ Keep colors calm and neutral to reduce sensory overload - no red walls here!
6️⃣ Anchor furniture in place to prevent tipping.

Hosting was supposed to be fun. ✨
But somewhere between late-night guest questions, chasing cleaners, and trying to keep up with Instagram… it got exhausting.
