Stop giving away your power: What airbnb hosts need to hear

We don’t always realize when we’re giving away our power. For many of us—especially women—the pattern runs deep. We work tirelessly to get here:

  • Saving and investing wisely.

  • Taking bold steps into real estate.

  • Dreaming up beautiful designs that reflect our vision.

  • Turning a house into a home that welcomes others.

And then, almost without noticing…..we hand it all over.

Maybe it’s to a property management company that makes all the decisions for us. Maybe it’s to a system or an “expert” who convinces us they know better. Before long, the very thing we built becomes something we barely recognize. The business no longer feels like ours—it feels like theirs.  And that can be depressing.

This isn’t to say that all property managers or coaches are “bad.” They absolutely serve a purpose. But here’s the truth most people don’t talk about:

👉 When you give away all of the decision-making power, you also give away your profits, your brand, and your vision.

That’s not the kind of success you worked so hard for.

A Personal Story

I learned this lesson the hard way.

Early on, I hired a business coach. They were skilled in their area, but they didn’t know vacation rentals or real estate investing. They coached me from a perspective that simply wasn’t aligned with my business. I trusted their process, even though my gut told me it wasn’t quite right.

By the time I realized it, I had invested heavily in the wrong path. It was an expensive lesson, and it left me in a hole I had to climb out of. Looking back, I see that I gave away my power by letting someone else dictate how my business should look—even though I was the one with the vision.

Stories From Clients

I see the same pattern with clients who come to me after working with property managers that just don’t care.

One client poured their heart and their hard-earned money into their property, but their property manager treated it like a side project. Corners were cut, guests weren’t wowed, and the bookings (and profits) reflected it. The owner’s vision for their investment had been completely lost.

They didn’t just feel frustrated—they felt powerless.  Infuriated.

Once we stepped in and aligned the management with their original goals, everything shifted. Bookings picked up. Guests left glowing reviews. Most importantly, the owner felt like their property was finally theirs again and they were realizing the profits they had always imagined.  One client recently said - “Suzanne, 2025 has been my best year yet!”  It is still their property, but working together has made all the difference!

Why This Happens

Giving up control often comes from a place of exhaustion or doubt.

  • “I don’t have time to do this.”

  • “I’m not the expert.”

  • “What if I mess it up?”

So instead of partnering with support that empowers us, we step back completely. It feels easier in the moment—but it can cost us dearly in the long run.

What Keeping Your Power Looks Like

Retaining your power doesn’t mean doing everything yourself. It means leading your business with intention:

  • Choosing partners who elevate your vision, not replace it.

  • Staying involved in the brand, the guest experience, and the story you want your property to tell.

  • Understanding the numbers so you’re not left wondering where the money is going.

  • Making decisions that align with your goals—not just someone else’s template.

Taking Back Your Power

If you’ve felt that disconnect—like the property you own doesn’t really feel like yours anymore—take this as your invitation. Step back in. Ask questions. Reconnect with your vision.

Your investment deserves more than being a line item in someone else’s portfolio. It deserves to be nurtured, grown, and celebrated as an extension of you.

And if you need support? That’s where I come in. Not to take your power, but to help you step more fully into it. Together, we can shape your property into something that wows guests and serves you as the owner.

Because when you keep your power, you don’t just have a property—you have a legacy.

And you know what?  Guests feel that.  They feel when someone truly cares about their stay.  When they are also more than just numbers - more than just revenue.
